Pema Chödrön

“Compassion is not a relationship between the healer and the wounded. It’s a relationship between equals. Only when we know our own darkness well can we be present with the darkness of others. Compassion becomes real when we recognize our shared humanity.”

I was asked this week what I thought the difference between ‘sympathy’ and ‘compassion’ was. My answer was that sympathy comes from a place of seeing the other as less than you, whilst compassion is, as Pema Chödrön says above, a relationship between equals.

Those that struggle today are the ones that guide us tomorrow
Whilst the mentor that supports us today will need our guidance in the morn

We are ever changing
Each with different vulnerabilities
And it is those that see both the ‘light’ and ‘dark’ in all of us that move beyond sympathy, to something far more beautiful; we have the opportunity of experiencing and gifting compassion.
